On Memorial Day this year I decided to make myself a little treat…I whipped up a small batch of ice cream with the wrong ingredients and a poor machine, but upon tasting my creation, I thought to myself, “I could make homemade ice cream at the Baraga Shrine.” I soon found myself ordering an ice cream maker and making a couple delicious practice batches. My secret recipe? Not so secret since it’s found in my mom’s Betty Crocker Cook Book from the 1950’s, but it is absolutely delicious (why would it be since a gallon of vanilla ice cream has a quart of heavy cream and 12 eggs yolks?) Those who ventured to try homemade ‘Baraga Better Than Ice Cream’ have been pleased. Below you’ll find pictures of Servant Maria making ice cream, the stash of ice cream in the freezer and people enjoying ice cream at the Baraga Shrine. Stop by this fall and find out for yourself why it’s called, “Better Than Ice Cream”!
